Lower School

All students study either French or Spanish in Year 7 and some will have the opportunity to study a second language in Year 9.  Many students at Heaton Manor School therefore study two languages, giving them the opportunity to understand both the language and culture of other countries at a time when people are increasingly likely to come into contact with foreign cultures and people, whether in business, social or academic context. All programmes of study in Lower School prepare pupils for GCSE courses in Year 10 and 11.

Upper School

GCSE options are offered in all languages. Pupils must, however, have studied the language in Lower School in order to opt into a GCSE course with the exception of Latin which pupils can start from Year 10. Most students, therefore, have the opportunity to study a language to GCSE. Pupils can, of course, choose to study their first or second foreign language or both. Many of our bilingual students are also able to be entered for a GCSE in their home language. The language work covered prepares students for a full GCSE in all languages, a highly valued qualification for both employers and universities. The GCSE (A*-B pass) enables pupils to continue their language study to AS and A Level.

Sixth Form

We offer AS and A Level in all languages. Though demanding, students enjoy being able to extend their language skills in a coherent and stimulating course of study, within contexts which address the interests of AS and A2 students.

Students may study one or two languages up to AS and A Level and require a GCSE grade B or above in the appropriate language to begin the AS course of study. A full A Level qualification is required to study that language at university.

At Heaton Manor School we are able to offer four Modern Foreign Languages. This range is possible because of the specialist expertise and knowledge of the Modern Languages staff.
