Heaton Manor Celebrates GCSE Results

Students and staff at Heaton Manor School were celebrating today when the latest GCSE results were released.

The school has seen a significant improvement in the key headline measures this year, including a massive leap in the proportion of students achieving the top 9-7 grades in both English and Maths, which has risen by over 6%. The proportion of students achieving a grade 5 or above in both English and maths (now called a ‘strong’ pass) has also risen by over 6% to 48%, and the proportion of students achieving a ‘standard’ pass in both English and maths has risen by 3% to over 65%.

The number of students achieving the measure of at least five or more standard passes (the equivalent of the old C grade) including English and maths, has risen to 60%, an improvement of over 6% from last year and those achieving at least five or more strong passes including English and maths, has risen by 3% to 42%.

Science results at the school were particularly strong this year, with an improvement of nearly 8% of students achieving a standard pass in at least two sciences and a very positive level of progress.

It is too early to say what the school’s overall Progress 8 figure will be (this is a measure introduced by the government to chart pupils’ progress across a range of subjects from their Key Stage 2 SATS to their GCSE results), but this is likely to be another significant improvement on last year.

Headteacher Karen Blackburn said, ‘It is the best part of our job as school staff to see students coming in to collect their results and be delighted by what they see when they open their envelopes. The results achieved by our students this year are evidence that effort really pays off, as staff and students worked harder than ever to prepare as well as they could for the exams. The results are also particularly pleasing in the context of an almost fully reformed exam system, where so much was uncertain in terms of outcomes.’

We are incredibly proud of the many individual outstanding academic and personal achievements amongst our Year 11 students this year.

Here are just some of our top performing Year 11 students who achieved results at the very highest academic level.

There are many other of our Year 11 students who have also performed at the highest level. There are too many to include all of them here.

We are delighted that the vast majority of our students have chosen to enroll with us at Heaton Manor to continue their Sixth Form studies.

For those Year 11 students who are not continuing their studies with us and are moving on to other post 16 colleges, employment or training we would finally like to wish a final ‘Good Luck’ and ‘Goodbye’.

Heaton Manor School is set to join Gosforth Academy’s Trust in the new school year.
