Passport to Employment Project

Enterprising Heaton Manor Students deliver a ‘Passport for Employment’ for Primary Schools

It has been a project six months in the making, but students from Heaton Manor School in Newcastle are in the final stages of completing delivery of an ambitious and innovative Primary Careers Project. Back in January 2017, the junior project managers formed a Business and Enterprise group to oversee a Civil Service Local Primary Careers day which will take place on Wednesday 21st June 2017. The group have adopted various roles including a management team of Project Manager and Deputy Project Manager and sub teams of Resource Creation Team, Customer Satisfaction Team, Logistics Team and finally, Marketing and Communications Team. As well as boosting student’s CVs and developing key employability skills by project managing a ‘real life’ event, students are achieving an extra-curricular Enterprise qualification with the support of the Newcastle United Foundation through participation in this programme.

Andy Gaskell, Ouseburn Learning Trust Manager, said ‘The Heaton Manor students are incredible, they have taken their responsibilities very seriously and have a real drive and professionalism to deliver a first rate project on behalf of Civil Service Local and our two Primary Schools. There will be over one hundred and twenty Year 5 pupils (aged 9 – 10) participating in the day, from the host school Benton Park Primary as well as pupil guests from Cragside Primary School.

The Primary pupils will receive a ‘Passport to Employment’ resource which will help explain how the Civil Service impacts on various different elements of our daily lives. With a carousel of six distinct, practical workshops which includes Civil Service representation from the Met Office, Border Force UK, HM Courts & Tribunals Service, UK Cyber Security, HM Revenue & Customs and HM Passport Office, we’re incredibly grateful to all our workshop volunteers for their support,’.

We look forward to updating external partners and our Ouseburn Learning Trust School networks on the success of what should a day packed full of real, relevant and inspiring learning! Photos from the day are on the Heaton Manor website, a video clip showcasing the event will be available from the OLT website in due course - see

In February 2017, Students from Heaton Manor School visited the Civil Service Benton Park View complex as part of their research into the ‘Passport to Employment’ project. Students were given a guided tour of the new facilities being piloted on the site and attended a meeting with the CS Local team where they heard more about the structure of the civil service, the number of departments and the type of work they carry out.
