Sports Hall Athletics Success

In recent weeks #HMSPEDept has had a number of successes at various Sports Hall athletics competitions. Sports Hall Athletics takes place annually at city, county and national levels. It contains standing jumps and standing throws running events. Each athlete must compete in a minimum of one track and one field event.

All four of our teams (Year 8 Boys, Year 8 girls, Year 10 boys and year 10 girls) qualified for the Tyne and Wear county round after winning three and claiming runner up spot in the other at city level.

There were some fantastic individual and team performances throughout the age groups against some top quality competition but one in particular stood out. Our team of Year 8 girls (Beth Cranston, Niaomi Rushby, Grace Chapman, Briony Livermore, Emily Proud, Ambi Willis and Sophie Stobbs) beat off some off the best Athletes from Gateshead, Sunderland North and South Tyneside to finish in third place. This competition is historically very competitive so to finish within the medals is a fantastic achievement and one of which the girls can be very proud. Well Done!

Because of their success at the Newcastle City competition, a number of our pupils were selected to represent a Newcastle select squad at Temple Park Leisure centre on Saturday 28th January.

Jack Leckie, Laura Wright, Ellen Mattheson and Lucy Wild were part of the U13 Boys and U15 Girls teams, which narrowly missed out of 3rd place.

In the Under 13 Girls event, Briony Livermore, Grace Chapman, Sophie Stobbs and Emily proud made up almost half of the team who stormed to first place with some brilliant athletic displays. Not to be out done, Isaac Nokes, Joe Davey, Alex Douglas, Billy Hibbert and Amir Colakovic were 5 of the 6 boys who also won gold at the event.

There was also representation from some our primary feeder schools at this event, Will Bulman and Jamie Reed-Embleton were part of the U11 boys teams which finished second. Millie Gosling, Jessie Davison and Elivia Bruce represented the U11 girls team which also finished in second place.

All of those pupils mentioned could now be selected to represent Tyne and Wear at the national finals in Birmingham.
